John W. Hamel, 88, of Sioux City, Iowa, died on July 14, 2017, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City, Iowa. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 3700 Indian Hills Drive, with Reverend Todd Schlitter and Reverend Laurice Streyffeler officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel on Monday, July 17th from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the family present at 6:00 p.m. and a Prayer Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Online condolences may be offered to the family at
www.meyerbroschapels.com Mr. Hamel was born August 31, 1928, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of John R. and Lucile (Hoover) Hamel. He attended school in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1946. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952 and spent most of that time stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged from the service in October 1952. After discharge, he was employed at Armour & Company until its closing in 1962. He then worked in construction and was a member of Carpenter Local 948 until his retirement in 1989.
He married Wanda Enyart of Laurens, Iowa, on January 12, 1957, at the First Methodist Church in Sioux City.
He was a long-time member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where he served on different committees, was a Trustee, and a member of Fellowship Club. He was also involved in Boy Scout activities for several years and had a lifelong interest in aviation and was a member of EAA and RC Modelers Club.
Those left to cherish his memory are his five sons and their wives: Stewart and Kathleen of Waukesha, Wisconsin; Bruce and Peggy of Sioux City, Iowa; Paul and Mary Jo of Mesquite, Texas; Anthony and Delores of Florence, Arizona; and Thomas and Donna of Plymouth, Minnesota. Nine grandchildren: John, Bethany, Monica, Eric, Ryan (Brianna), Samantha, Alexandra, Kristen, and Natasha. One step-granddaughter, Catrina, and two step-great-grandsons, Greg and Roddy. Two great-granddaughters, Baylea and Jamie Mae; and one great-grandson, Cal.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda; his parents; and his sister and brother-in-law, Marian and Sol Murad.
