Marylan Keehn, Hinton, passed away peacefully Friday June 2, 2017. As Marylan and her family had planned, a graveside remembrance will be held, 10:00 a.m., Saturday June 10, at Melbourne Cemetery, K42, East of Hinton (bring a lawn chair).
Marylan Zoe Brehm was born January 20, 1927 in Sioux City, Iowa, daughter of Ralph and Hazel “Irene” (Burke) Brehm. She married Lawrence Keehn of Hawarden in December of 1956. She lived in Hinton most of life as well as some time in California in her early 20s. She graduated from Hinton High School, and Westmar College, and attended Pasadena City College while in California. At that time she participated in the Rose Parade Queen pageant.
Her life was filled with music at an early age as her father played with the Monahan Post Band that preformed in Paris, France when she was about three. Marylan started playing piano a few years later. She began playing (piano and organ) for church and related services when in high school and continued until just a few years ago. Some of her favorite moments “tickling the ivories” were playing with the Merle/Darrell Lake Orchestra, accompanying Myron Floren of Lawrenece Welk fame and providing music for a Miss America reception. She also had an opportunity to play the Mighty Wurlitzer organ that has been returned to the Orpheum after being at the auditorium for many years.
Teaching was another of her enjoyments. She taught first grade in Akron and Lawton for a few years, and substituted in Hinton several years, sometimes having her own children as students. After school, she tried to instill the love of music in countless children and young adults in Hinton and later in Sioux City. For their recitals, Marylan always had homemade cookies.
Marylan also served as a secretary for many businesses in the Sioux City Area.
Traveling was an important part of her life. She had grandparents, cousins, and aunts in Southern California with whom she spent time. Family vacations were spent visiting friends and relatives . She was able to visit her son, Tom, twice while he was in the Navy stationed at Virginia Beach, VA. When her daughter worked for Winnebago Motorhomes, they were able to travel across the country and Canada to sightsee or visit friends and relatives in luxury. One of those trips was to visit Tom while he was working near El Paso, TX. During that visit she was able to go shopping in Mexico. One trip to Chicago landed her at a Cubs game 12 rows behind home plate.
She was a Iowa Hawkeye, Kansas City Royals, and Chicago Cubs and Bulls fan.
Marylan is survived by son Tom Keehn of Westfield, Daughter Paula Keehn of Hinton and Forest City, and cousin Jim Brehm of Dakota Dunes. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Jack Brehm, aunts and uncle, and many friends.
