SIOUX CITY | Thomas E. “Tom” Wente, 91, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Holy Spirit Assisted Living.
Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 5, 2017 at the Cathedral of The Epiphany with Father Michael Cronin officiating. Burial with military honors will be in South Creek Cemetery, rural Ponca, NE.
Visitation with the family present will be 3-6 p.m. Sunday with a Divine Mercy Chaplet service at 3 p.m. followed by the rosary and a vigil service at 5 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.
Tom was born Feb. 15, 1926 on the family farm near Newcastle, NE. He was the son of Charles D. and Ella V. (Coleman) Wente. He grew up in Ponca, Neb. and graduated from Ponca High School. After he returned from serving with the U.S. Army during WWII he attended Creighton University.
On July 27, 1957 he married Mary Ann Knerl in Ponca, Neb. To that union eleven children were born.
Tom started his 39 year career in the purchasing department at St. Joseph Hospital and retired as the assistant administrator at Marian Health Center.
He was a longtime active member of the Cathedral of the Epiphany and a member of the VFW. He enjoyed gardening, decorating and crossword puzzles.
Survivors include ten children: Tim (Marites) Wente of Houston, TX; Joe Wente of California; Ann (Dan) Myers of Sioux City; Ellen (Dave) Dirks of Sioux City; Janie (Steve) Christensen of Okoboji; Jackie (Joe) Carey of Ankeny; T.J. (Jody) Wente of Dakota Dunes, S.D.; Maria ( Doug) Maharry of Newton; Meg (Trent) Eckstaine of LeMars; Liz (Trent Nessman) Wente of Sioux City; grandchildren: Sarah and Adrian Wente; Laura (Fred) Sulzbach; Tom (Reyn) Myers; Audrey (John) Cord; Tony Myers (Katie Partch, fiancée) and Abbey Myers; Joey Manning, Emily Manning (Eric Lande, fiancé) and Katie Manning; Grace (Tyler) Smith; Nick Christensen; Ben (Leah) Carey; Erin Carey, Bridget Carey (Adam Gerenz, fiancé); T.J. II, Jacob, Sam and Rachel Wente; Olivia, Paul, Adam, Luke and Sophia Maharry; Chris, Mary Kate, Jack, Gabriel and Caleb Eckstaine; and Claire Nessman; 4 great-grandchildren; siblings, Harold (Betty) Wente of Emmetsburg, IA, Mary Jo Onnen of Denver, CO, Jeannie Norfolk of Manhattan Beach, CA, Carol Hassenger of Scottsdale, AZ and Robert “Butch” (Ann) Wente of Springfield, MO; sister-in-law, Lois Wente of Omaha, NE; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; infant son, John; infant grandson, Michael Wente; brothers, Charles “Chub”, John “Jack” and Bill and Tony Wente; and a sister, Helen Ann Curry.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
Memorials may be made in his name to Holy Spirit Retirement Home, Cathedral of The Epiphany or to Hospice of Siouxland.
