Steve G. Margeas

Steve G. Margeas, 86, of Sioux City, passed away at his residence on Sunday, May 28, 2017.

 

Services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday June 2, 2017 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church with Rev. Dimitri Tobias and Rev. Lucas Rice officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4:00 P.M. Thursday and the family will be present after 5:00 P.M. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. There will be a Masonic Service at 5:30 P.M. and a Trisagion Service at 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.

 

Steve was born November 3, 1930 in Sioux City; he was the son of George and Paraskeve (Papanikolaou) Margeas. Steve grew up and attended grade school in Sioux City. He attended Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, MO for Junior High, Senior High and College and then transferred to Morningside College.

 

Steve entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Alaska before his marriage to Virginia Zahariades on June 26, 1955, in Mason City, IA. After their marriage, Steve returned to Sioux City and joined the family business, Coney Island Restaurant, which he still owned and operated with his wife Virginia.

 

A son, George, and a daughter, Maria, were born to the marriage.

 

Steve served in the 185th Air National Guard for 34 years and was activated twice during that service. 

 

Steve was a lifelong member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and had served as President of the congregation, as well as being a member of the Order of AHEPA. He was a longtime member of Tyrian Masonic Lodge and the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, where he served as Potentate in 1988. He was a 60-year member and past director of the Shrine Oriental Band, served as an Imperial Marshall's Aide, was a member of the Royal Order of Jesters, and served as President of Central States Shrine Association.

 

Steve loved to travel to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico each winter and he and his wife enjoyed the many Shrine trips they took together. He also enjoyed spending time with family at their cottage on Clear Lake, Iowa.  He enjoyed sports and was a state champion hurdler at Wentworth Military Academy in high school, where some of his hurdle records still remain unbeaten. 

 

Survivors include his wife Virginia of Sioux City; a daughter Maria Schultz and her husband Roger of Sioux City; 3 grandsons: Zachary Schultzhaus and his wife Janna of Fort Washington, MD, Jordan Schultz of Sioux City, and Beau Margeas of Phoenix, AZ; Michelle Booge of Phoenix, AZ, a sister- in-law: Daisy Margeas of Sioux City; sisters and brothers-in-law: Theodore and Niki Pappas of Brookfield, WI and Bob and Robin Zack of Scottsdale, AZ. Steve is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, and special koumbari Alex and Kiki Karras.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son George Margeas, his brother Nick Margeas, and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Aristotle and Kathryn Pappelis.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Restoration Fund.
