Dorothy Y. Wagner, 89, of Sioux City, Iowa passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, May 28, 2017.
Visitation with the family will be Wednesday, May 31 from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Services will be Thursday, June 1 at 11:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Dr. Tom Murray officiating. A luncheon will follow the service. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Dorothy was born December 26, 1927 in Ashton, Iowa to Dick and Ethel (Delamater) Van Dyke. She spent her childhood in Sheldon, Iowa. She lost her father as a young girl. She and her mother had a very special bond.
She attended Iowa Teachers College (UNI) receiving her teaching certificate.
Dorothy married Richard G. Wagner on September 16, 1949. They established their home in Sioux City in 1953 after time in Amarillo, Texas and Iowa City, Iowa. Dorothy taught school until her children were born.
Her priorities were family, church, and service to the community. She was involved in many civic and social organizations including: teaching Sunday School, Cub Scout den mother of Spirited Den 3 Pac 121, La Sertoma, Junior League, PTA, Mary Elizabeth Day Care Center, Shesler Hall, PEO Chapter LD, Traveler’s Club, Sioux City Symphony, and Toastmasters International.
A special interest was dental health and education. She received local, state, and national awards for her dedicated service. She was the only non-dentist to receive the outstanding service award from the Iowa Dental Association.
Her efforts were rewarded with many close and caring friends.
Dorothy was very committed to her church. She sang in the choir and served as the Clerk of the Session for many years. The church was a great source of inspiration.
Her husband, children, and grandchildren were the source of much happiness. Her most cherished memories came from these relationships.
Survivors from the immediate family include: her husband, Dr. Richard G. Wagner of Sioux City; her sons, Dr. Richard W. Wagner and his daughter Elizabeth, and Dr. David V. Wagner and his wife Ashley and sons Bradley and Brandon, both of Dakota Dunes, SD;
She was preceded in death by her parents and her only brother, Richard Van Dyke.
A memorial has been established at First Presbyterian Church.
