John L. Garred Sr. M.D.

   John L. Garred Sr. M.D., 92, of Whiting, Iowa died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Tuesday, May 16, 2017.
   Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at Whiting Christian Church with Pastor Shawn Walden officiating.  Private burial will take place at Whiting City Cemetery.  Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday with the family present 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. all at the church.
   John Lee Garred, son of Ulysses V. and Florence K. (Phillips) Garred, was born September 23, 1924 in Roanoke, VA.  At an early age, John’s family moved to Ashland, KY and he attended school there graduating high school in 1942.  Following high school, he attended Ashland Junior College from 1942 to 1943 and then attended the University of Louisville from 1943 to 1946 receiving his Medical Doctor degree.  He served his internship at St. Joseph Infirmary in Louisville and this is where he met his future wife Fern E. Van Doren.  They were married on December 31, 1947 in Ashland, KY.  In 1948, Dr. John L. Garred started his medical practice in Whiting, IA and was still active in the practice until the time of his passing. 
   John was inducted into the United States Navy on January 17, 1944 and served two tours of duty.  On April 1, 1952, he was appointed a Lieutenant in the Medical Corps in the Naval Reserve until his honorable discharge.
   Dr. John was an active member of Whiting Christian Church and had served on the Whiting School Board from 1955 to 1980. In addition, he was an American Legion and Masonic member.  He held several professional designations including: Attending Physician and Surgeon in Onawa hospitals for 65 years, Chief of Staff at Burgess Health Center from 1963 to current, Board of Medical Examiners State of Iowa from 1984 to 1988, serving as Chairman from 1986 to 1988. He served as Monona County Medical Examiner, a charter Member and Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and Fellow of the American Academy of Abdominal Surgeons. He was a Senior Air Medical Examiner for the Federal Aviation Agency for 55 years.  Outside of work, Dr. John loved flying and all things related to aviation. He was a multi-engine, instrument, commercial pilot with over 10,000 hours of flight time and built two aerobatic biplanes.
   He is survived by his wife, Fern E. Garred; son, John L. Garred Jr. M.D. and wife Kate; two grandsons: Matthew John Garred and wife Laura, and John Taylor “J.T.” Garred; and one sister-in-law, Nancy Lovejoy.
   He was preceded in death by his parents; three children: two in infancy and Ann Garred D.D.S.; and one brother, William P. Garred M.D. and wife Marilyn.
   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Whiting Christian Church or Burgess Health Center Foundation.
