SIOUX CITY | Melvin L. “Mel” Broer, 70, of Sioux City passed away Friday, May 5, 2017 at a local care facility.
 
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 8, 2017 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Rev. Steven Stoll officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday with the family present 6-8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.
 
Melvin was born Nov. 6, 1946 in Randolph, Nebr. He was the son of William Hans and Mildred Mae (Tiegten) Broer. His family moved to Sioux City was a child. He graduated from Hinton High School where he was very active in sports. Mel served with the U.S. Army.
 
He married Diane Gatewood and two sons, Allen and Scott, were born to that union. Mel later married Rebecca Hinds and to that union, his daughter, Jill, was born. He has been with his significant other, Georgia Risley, for 30 years. Georgia’s son, Shannon has also been a part of Mel’s life.  
 
His early employment included I.B.P., an iron worker and then he hauled cattle and hogs. He then worked and manage various bars before he owned and operated Buzz Saw #2 in Waterbury, Nebr.
 
He was a member of the South Sioux City American Legion and the Moose Lodge.
 
Mel was an avid sports fan and he loved shooting pool. When he was younger he enjoyed rec basketball and bowling.
 
Survivors include Diane Fox, Rebecca Broer and Georgia Risley; sons, Allen (Stephanie) Broer of Davenport, IA and Scott (Lisa) B. of Moline, IL; daughter, Jill (Shawn) Craig of South Sioux City, NE; 9 grandchildren, Nyssa Swain, Makayla Broer, Miranda Bell, Austin, Hailey, Melea and Alyssa Broer, and William and Keturah Craig; 4 great-grandchildren, Keagan, Braden and Dylan Swain and Scarlett Bell; Georgia’s son, Shannon Batten; 4 siblings, Allan (Maria) Broer of California, Gene Broer of Turin, IA, Gloria (Dennis) Julch of Omaha, NE and Donna (Steve) Kaiden of Montgomery, IL; nieces and nephews.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Walter Broer; infant brother, Marlin Broer; and a sister-in-law, Nancy.
