Delmer Johnson

December 25, 1935 — April 12, 2017

Delmer L. “Sam” Johnson, 81 of Sioux City passed away on Wednesday April 12, 2017 at the Holy Spirit Retirement Home after a brief illness. 

Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux City. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Newcastle, NE. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. Monday with the family present from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. and a Vigil Service at 7:00 P.M. all at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com

Delmer was born December 25, 1935 in Geddis, SD; he was the son of Harry and Berdie (Olefson) Johnson. The family moved to Mitchell when Delmer was seven year old. Delmer graduated from Mitchell High School here he played basketball and then served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. 

In 1959, Delmer came to Sioux City. He joined Cement Finishers Union and then the Carpenters Union and worked on union jobs as a cement finisher at many construction sites over the years. 

Delmer married Mary Beth Hayden August 10, 1968 in Sioux City. 

Delmer was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church for 44 years. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, kids and grandchildren. Delmer also enjoyed watching old western movies and Nebraska Football, listening to Johnny Cash and Elvis music, fishing and he was a fan of Iowa State Basketball. 

Survivors include his wife Mary Beth Johnson of Sioux City; 2 children: Stacey Johnson of Sioux City and Todd Johnson (Nicole) of Lincoln, NE; a sister: Donna Farris of Mitchell, SD; 4 grandchildren: Brittany, Corey, Brody and Myles Johnson. 

Delmer was preceded in death by his parents, a son Mark; 2 brothers Willis and Lawrence; 3 sisters: Harriott, Margaret and Gelene.
