Shirley J. “Shades” Junck, 90, of Sioux City, passed peacefully into the arms of her Savior on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, following a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family. A Memorial Service will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at Calvary Lutheran Church with Reverend James Travis officiating. Interment will follow at Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, April 17th at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with family present at 6:00 p.m. and a Prayer Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Online Condolences may be offered to the family at www. meyerbroschapels.com
Shades was born on August 23, 1926 to Claus and Anna (Prien) Junck and spent her entire life in Sioux City. After graduating as class valedictorian from Leeds High School in 1944, she worked as a bookkeeper for National Foods before taking a job with the Woodbury County Recorder’s office in 1956. In 1976, she became Chief Deputy Recorder, and remained in that position until her retirement in 1993. Faith and family were the most important aspects of Shades’ life. Along with her parents and siblings, she became a charter member of Calvary Lutheran Church in 1935, and worshipped there until her death. She was a member of the Rebecca Circle and the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, and taught Sunday School for many years. Shades will be remembered as a faithful prayer warrior and devoted Christian. Although she never married and had no children of her own, Shades was a mother figure to many family members, especially the children of her sister Alice: Gary and Vern Ruschmann and Lanette Falk. When her sister Joyce passed away in 1976, Shades became a second mother to Joyce’s daughters: Kathy Rosene, Cindy Deadrick, Connie Persinger and Cheri Radden. She also was a grandmother to Cristy, Britni, JP, Elaina and Acacia.
Remembered for her kind, loving and generous nature and for her happy and friendly personality, she was a fixture in the Leeds community for many decades, known and loved by all. Children especially were drawn to Shades and she frequently could be found surrounded by little ones. An avid reader, she enjoyed word puzzles and keeping current on political affairs.
She was a proud member of the Republican Party. Her smiling face often was seen as she walked throughout Leeds. Shades is survived by her sister, Lois Marquis of Sioux City, and nieces, nephews and cousins too numerous to name.
She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Alice Ruschmann, Merlin Junck, Ralph Junck, and Joyce Rosene, as well as infant siblings Wilma Mae Junck and an unnamed brother; and nephews Gary Ruschmann and Mike Junck.
