Ruth Wilson, 100, of Buffalo Center, Iowa, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2017 at Sunrise Health Center in Sioux City. Ruth DeVries Wilson was born September 14, 1916 to Bob and Kate (Anderson) DeVries at Buffalo Center.
She was raised and educated in Buffalo Center. Following high school, Ruth attended Waldorf College in Forest City for a semester and she taught in a country school in Winnebago County for a year. Ruth was united in marriage to Thomas A. Wilson, Jr. on August 21, 1938 at Blue Earth, Minnesota on a Sunday morning. The couple made their home in Buffalo Center where they owned and operated a general store which expanded to include a grocery store and two clothing stores.
Ruth’s Christian faith was the guiding force of her life. She had a missionary spirit. She witnessed effectively to all of her family and others. Ruth and Tom, in their retirement years, were members of Christ’s Church in Fountain Hills, Arizona. They hosted many bible studies in their home.
Ruth’s hobby was writing. She wrote about the early development of Buffalo Center and included stories of her family. She particularly enjoyed writing children’s stories and compiled a collection which she and Tom put together in a book. She also enjoyed drawing and painting, especially pictures of birds.
In their retirement years, Ruth and Tom enjoyed exploring Arizona and visiting their children.
Ruth is survived by her children, Mick (Carol) Wilson of Britt, Iowa, Tom (Patti) of Buffalo Center, Iowa, Kathy (Jim) Anfinson of Sioux City, Iowa and Robert “Bob” (Becky) Wilson of Littleton, Colorado; 11 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren (along with two on the way and one great-great grandchild on the way); sister-in-law Clairebel DeVries of Buffalo Center along with many nieces and nephews.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Tom in 2006, her sisters Ethel Oldaker, Elsie Larson, Gladys Becker and brothers Jim DeVries, Bob DeVries, Charlie DeVries, Jack DeVries, and Dick DeVries.
