Patrick Larry “Pat” Hansel, 73, of Sioux City went to be home with the Lord on Monday, January 30, 2017. Pat passed away at his home following his battle with cancer. Memorial Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 7, at First Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Kevin Miller officiating. Visitation with the family will be 10 a.m. until service time at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Memorials may be directed to the First Evangelical Free Church in Pat’s name.
Pat Hansel was born May 31, 1943 in Sioux City to Marvin (Mike) and Irene (Coyle) Hansel. He lived in Sioux City for all of his life, except for 4 years when he attended college. Pat graduated from East High School in 1961, where he excelled at basketball, football and track. While at East, he set many school and state track records including records in 100, 200, 440 and 880-yard events. Pat then furthered his education at Drake University on a track scholarship, where he was an All-American in the mile relay. Pat was honored years later as Drake’s Athlete of the Century. He was inducted into the Sioux City Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Missouri Valley Conference in 2008, where he was one their track athletes of the century as well. On June 16, 1962, Pat married Audrey Faye Hoklin in Sioux City. After attending Drake, the couple headed back to Sioux City where Pat lived the rest of his life. He worked for Zenith and John Morell. Then for twenty-three years, Pat worked as the golf superintendent for Green Valley and Floyd Golf Courses. Pat retired from the job in 2012. Pat was an avid golfer and would play when he could. He also attended many track meets, including the Drake relays almost every year. Pat attended all of his grandchildren’s activities and enjoyed spending time with his family.
Pat is survived by his wife, Audrey of Sioux City; daughters, Julie (Audie) Baughman and Lisa (Steven) Chartier; honorary daughter Kristen (Albert) Perez; grandchildren Alexandra (Chris) Meyers, Briana and her boyfriend Zach Pike Madelyn Baughman and Patrick Baughman; honorary grandchildren; Elliana and Lucia Perez; brothers, Mike (Chris) Hansel and Brent (Connie) Hansel; sister, Carla (Kurt) De Koyser; brothers-in-law, Gary (Connie) Hoklin and Gene Hansen; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Marvin (Mike) and Irene Hansel; sister Cyndi Mordhorst, sisters-in-law, Mary Hansen and Sharon Hansel.
