Walter Haltli

December 11, 1921 — January 26, 2017

Walter O. and Mae I. Haltli, both 95, of Sioux City, passed away respectively on Thursday, January 26, 2017, and Saturday, December 24, 2016, at local nursing facility. Memorial services for the couple will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 18, 2017, at Westlawn Presbyterian Church, where visitation will begin after 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be given at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Walter O., son of Carl and Julia (Aune) Haltli, was born on December 11, 1921, in Fosston, Minnesota. He grew up at Fosston and farmed and did carpentry work with his father. In 1942, Walter was united in marriage with Genovieve Johnson. Two children, Wayne and Linda, were born to this marriage, which ended in divorce in 1946.

On August 29, 1942, Walter was drafted into the United States Army and served as a carpenter with the Army Air Forces Base Unit in Sioux City. He was honorably discharged on October 28, 1945, with the rank of Sergeant.

On October 18, 1947, Walter was blessed with a second marriage, this time with Mae Deits in Dakota City, Nebraska. Three children were born to this union. Walter also adopted Mae’s two children. Walter and Mae made their home in Sioux City, residing in the same house for 65 years. He partnered with his son Walter and son-in-law Chuck Hoffman at Halman Construction in Sioux City until his retirement in 1985.

Throughout the years, Walter was a member of Westlawn Presbyterian Church, South Sioux City Eagles Club, Moose Lodge, the American Legion, the DAV, and Carpenters’ Local 948 for over 50 years.

Walter is survived by seven children: Wayne Force (Lois Steven); Linda (John) Komula; Virginia (Gene) Martin; Barbara Eggink; Lynnette (Charles) Hoffman; Walter (Suzanne) Haltli, and Douglas Haltli Lee; 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; a sister Sharon Sieg; a sister-in-law Jeanette Haltli; and many nieces and nephews.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; wife Mae Haltli; siblings: Martin Haltli, Gladys Gilbertson, Clara Hanson, Edith Johnson, Harry Haltli, Lillian Haltli and Robert Haltli; a son-in-law Nick Eggink; a brother-in-law Kenneth Sieg; and a grandson Steven Eggink. (Mae’s obituary was published in the Sioux City Journal in December.)
