William "Billy" Slate

Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m., Saturday, January 14, 2017, at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel with Father Michael Erpelding officiating. Military honors will be presented at the funeral home. The family will greet friends starting at 1:00 p.m. The family requests attendees wear blue jeans in honor of Billy.

William Gerard Slate, son of Arnold William and Mary Ann (Flynn) Slate, was born December 3, 1957, in Sioux City, IA. Billy was a lifelong Sioux City resident. He attended school at St. Boniface, Hoover, and West High School and later received his G.E.D.

On September 9, 1978, Billy was united in marriage to Linda Marie Watts in Sioux City. To this union two children, Adam and Virginia, were born.

In 1976, Billy enlisted in the Air National Guard and this became his life career. On December 12, 2012, he was honorably discharged from the 185th Air Refueling Wing in Sioux City, IA. At the time of his discharge, he had attained the rank of Technical Sgt.

Billy enjoyed shooting pool, dart tournaments, camping, boating and his dog Heidi. Above all, he enjoyed his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Slate; son, Adam Slate, daughter, Virginia (Timothy) Shuck; four grandchildren: Dallas, Hunter, Skylar and Seth Shuck all of Sioux City; siblings: Dave (Teresa) Slate of Cambridge, IA, Dale (Karal) Slate of Sioux City, JoAnne (Eugene) Potter of Sioux City, Danny (Sandy) Slate of Mesa, AZ, Jean Griffin of Owasso, OK, Jane (Marvin) Whitlock of Waukee, IA, Mary Kay Miller of Sioux City, Laurie (Larry) Scofield of Sioux City and Teresa (Ron) Lemke of Sioux City; nieces; nephews; relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Joseph Slate and two brothers-in-law: Tom Griffin and Richard Miller.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
