Joseph A. (Joe) Woodward, 86, of Sioux City passed away Monday, January 9, 2017 at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date at Grant Township Cemetery in Ticonic, Iowa.
Joseph Allison Woodward was born on May 27, 1930 in Ticonic, Iowa. He was one of nine children born to Russell D. and Blanche (Beers) Woodward. He graduated from Maple Valley High School, Mapleton, Iowa with the class of 1948. Joe enlisted in the United States Marines serving from 1951 – 1954. He served during the Korean War and was a radio operator stationed on the island of Cheju-Do. Joe then attended Morningside College, graduating in June 1960. He made a career as an insurance adjuster, retiring from Farm Bureau Insurance Co. in 1990.
Joe was united in marriage to June Watson on May 20, 1951 in Ticonic. Joe and June moved to Sioux City in September 1956. 8 children were born to this union. Their children were raised in Sioux City, all graduating from East High School.
Joe enjoyed golfing, reading, playing suduko, watching sports on TV but most of all he loved spending time with his kids and grandkids. He looked forward to traveling and summer vacations with his family, getting “out and about” with no specific destination but just to see what was going on, and was known for doing yardwork in his sleeveless shirts. He was a self-taught banjo player, receiving his first banjo from his uncle Albert at age 9 and then purchasing his second banjo from the Sears catalog at age 12.
Joe is survived by his wife June of Sioux City; children: Denise (Denny) Pyzel of Hawarden, IA; Craig Woodward and girlfriend Lisa of Council Bluffs, IA; Corey Woodward; Rhonda (Randy) Facile of Manning, IA; Roxanne (Ron) Hartnett of Dakota City, NE; and Lana (Pat) Keleher of Sioux City, IA; 15 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; two brothers: Don (Sue) Woodward of Ticonic, IA and Jerry (Jean) Woodward of Wichita, KS; along with many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two sons Ron and Chuck Woodward, two grandsons Jason Woodward and Jack Keleher, a sister Marilyn, and five brothers Mel, Everett, Lyle, Rollie and Elwin B.
