Rose E. Messersmith

March 22, 1939 — January 9, 2017

 

Sioux City, IA – Rose E. Messersmith, 77, of Sioux City died Monday, January 9, 2017, the result of a stroke.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 12, 2017, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel (3220 Stone Park Blvd. Sioux City, IA 51104) with Rev. Clyde Pritchett officiating.  Burial will follow in Logan Park Cemetery.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home.  Following services at the cemetery, there will be a light luncheon and fellowship at Faith Lutheran Church in Sioux City.  Online condolences may be expressed at www.meyerbroshchapels.com.

Rose and her twin sister Leona were born March 22, 1939 to Carl and Margaret (Diekemper) Stieren of rural Aloys, West Point, NE.  

Rose received her education at St. Aloysius grade school in rural Aloys, School Sisters of St. Francis in Milwaukee, WI receiving her teaching degree from Alverna College, Milwaukee.  She taught at rural Iowa schools and continued her career at Lewis & Clark Elementary in South Sioux City, NE.  Rose retired in 2002 after 32 years at Lewis & Clark teaching 4th grade from the same classroom during this time.  Rose was passionate about teaching and strived to give all her students the best possible education.  By the end of her career she had taught the children of former students.  Rose made lifelong friends at Lewis & Clark.

Rose married LeRoy Messersmith on August 5, 1989 at their home.   

Rose enjoyed browsing seed catalogs in preparation for her garden and flowers.  She made sure red impatiens were prominent giving a nod to her avid support of the Nebraska Cornhuskers.  Rose and neighbor Mike had a friendly rivalry each football Saturday when Huskers or Hawkeyes played.  The Nebraska flag was high and flying.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Carl and Margaret Stieren, sisters: Dorothy Muhs, Marie Batenhorst, Clara Gentrup, Rita Luebbert, Leona Hagedorn and brothers: Kenneth and Robert Stieren.

Survivors include her husband LeRoy of Sioux City, brother, Art Stieren of West Point, NE, sister, Agnes (Vincent) Rolf of West Point, NE and many loving extended family members.  She will be missed by all who knew her.
