Lois Jane (Popken) Ream, 89 died December 24, 2016 at her home surrounded by her family in Sioux City where she lived since 1950.
Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, December 30, 2016 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M. Thursday, December 29, 2016 at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Lois was born September 24, 1927 in Le Mars, Iowa and attended a one room school house for her elementary education and graduated from Akron High School in 1945. After high school she worked at the Sioux City Airbase in administration.
She married Chester Ream August 31, 1946 and lived in Sioux City on 6th Street. As a young mother she was struck with polio in January 1948 and was hospitalized for 128 days. During her long recovery she had to learn how to walk and use her hands and write again. She raised three children Nancy, Ronald and Betty. The family was a victim of the Floyd River Flood of 1953 so Lois went to work at Kat’s drug store to help the family recover financially from the flood. She also worked as a cashier at the Economy Market and Hinky Dinky food markets where she was popular with customers and fellow employees and earned Cashier of the year 6 times.
Lois was an active member of her Union and helped to organize and participate in Union gatherings for years after her retirement. Lois enjoyed traveling, family reunions, ceramics, rug making and phone calls with close friends.
She is survived by her children Nancy Ream and husband Ken Herdliska of Iowa City Iowa, Ronald and Sharon Ream Nashville Tennessee and Betty Seemann Highland Beach Florida. Grandchildren include Matthew, Anastacia and Clint. Great grandchildren include Kyler, Kinsley, Grace, Amelia and Jenner.
Lois is preceded in death by her husband Chester and her sister Dorothy, Brother Wallace and Great-grandson Aspen.
