Harriet was born January 19, 1924 in Oelwein, Iowa. She attended school there until 1933 when she moved with her parents and two sisters, Norma and Jean, to an acreage near Sumner. There she attended a rural Fayette County school. In 1941 Harriet graduated from Sumner High School and some years later received a BA degree from Upper Iowa University, Fayette, Iowa.
Harriet taught in rural Bremer County, Iowa; in Waukesha, Wisconsin; in the Iowa towns of Oran, Hazleton, Sumner and Sioux City; and in a school for missionary children in Medellin, Colombia. In 1986, after 38 years of teaching, she retired. For four of her early retirement years she enjoyed teaching piano lessons in her home.
Being a part of the family of God was important to Harriet, having been converted to Christ in 1944. Anything good that may have come from her life she attributed to God, His gifts and His grace. Her only regret was that she was not more devoted to Him or more loving to those whose lives touched hers.
Harriet was a member of the New Hope Wesleyan Church of Sioux City for 22 years. She served as church pianist, librarian and children’s teacher. She was a member of the Sioux City Retired Educators. At age 88, Harriet began attending New Life Community Church nearer her home, family, friends and neighbors.
Harriet was blessed with a loving, caring family. The deprivations of the depression years did not daunt her parents. Never complaining, they worked hard on the small farm to provide the needs of their family. These and other values were instilled in the lives of their daughters.
She is survived by a sister, Norma Harkins of Port Angeles, Washington, and a sister, Jean Olsen of Sioux City, IA; five nephews and nieces, Joe Harkins (Bonnie), Dennis Harkins (Nancy), Celeste Harkins-Miller (Leland), Scott Olsen (Debra), and Sheila Olsen-Sogge (John) as well as eleven grand nieces and nephews and their children. She leaves several cousins.
Harriet was preceded in death by her father, Norman Bruner in 1972; her mother, Greeta Buckman Bruner in 1992; her oldest niece, Norma Jean Harkins-Ramirez in 2004; her brothers-in-law, Joseph Harkins in 2008; and Donald Olsen in 2015.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to Global Partners through The Wesleyan Church and directed to the family.
