Gerald R Uhl

SIOUX CITY | Gerald R. “Jerry” Uhl, 88, of Sioux City, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016, at his residence surrounded by his family.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Nativity. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a vigil service at 7 p.m., followed by a rosary service, all at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. 

Jerry was born Jan. 6, 1928, in Sioux City. He was the son of Ray and Theresa (Knittel) Uhl. Jerry grew up in Sioux City and attended St. Joseph Grade School and then graduated from Trinity High School at the age of 17. He joined the U.S. Marines in 1945 and served during World War II at Parris Island, S.C., Camp Pendleton, Calif., Maui, and in the Marshall Islands. He was honorably discharged in 1949. He graduated from Creighton University in 1953.

Jerry married Doris Jean Johnson on Sept. 10, 1960, in Sioux City, and she passed away on Sept. 10, 2006, in Sioux City. He was a longtime employee of the Internal Revenue Service. After retirement, he and his wife Doris operated “The Uhl Tax Service” out of their home for many years.

He was a member of the Church of the Nativity. He was an avid bowler. He enjoyed his daily walks at the mall and his special morning coffee with friends and employees of the Morningside Burger King and Sunnybrook McDonalds. Jerry also enjoyed farming and owned a farm near Lawton, Iowa, for several years in the 1960s.

Those that knew Jerry knew he lived his life with a high degree of integrity, moral values, principles, and most of all, his strong faith in God.

Survivors include his children, John Uhl (Niki) of Sioux City, Marcia Krage (Joe) of Sioux City, Ruth Blume (Chris) of Omaha, and Margo Uhl of Omaha; two sisters, Marguerite Bannister of Long Beach, Calif., and Rita Consolvo of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, Don Uhl of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; six grandchildren, Whitney Dailey, Allie Dailey (Tim Smith), Samantha Dailey, Annie Krage, Aaron Uhl and Reid Uhl; and a great-grandson, Sawyer Smith.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris; nine brothers and sisters, Sylvester Uhl, Delores Uhl, Marvin Uhl, Vance Gerald Uhl, Milton Kenneth Uhl and Clifford Uhl; and three infant brothers and sisters.

Memorials may be directed to Church of the Nativity Catholic Church in Sioux City or Hospice of Siouxland.

Dad, you have given us the greatest life. We were blessed to have you as a father, grandfather and great-grandfather. You and mom are together now. We know you will be watching over us, guiding us through this life.
