Despi A. Kounas, 74 of Sioux City passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.
The funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Sioux City. Father Dimitri Tobias will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Friday at the Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Despi was born August 31, 1942 in Sioux City; she was the daughter of Andrew and Evelyn (Stavropoulos) Kounas. Despi grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School and then from WIT. She graduated Cum Laude from Morningside College in 1970 with a bachelor of science degree. Despi received masters of science degree from the University of Iowa and then a master’s degree in microbiology from the University of Kansas. She went on to receive doctorate degrees from MIT and John Hopkin’s University in microbiology and biochemistry.
Despi worked at Sioux Bee Honey for 21 years as a microbiologist and biochemist.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and had a passion for Native American Genealogy. Despi also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.
Survivors include her 4 brothers: George Kounas (Dolly) of Fort Collins, CO, Nick Kounas (Sharon) of Highland, CA, John Kounas (Karen) of Sloan, IA, Chris Kounas (Cheryl) of South Sioux City, NE; 3 sisters: Sophie Milbrodt (Dale) of Sioux City, Catherine Southerland (John) of St. Joseph, MO and Anna Kounas of Sioux City. Despi is also survived by nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers: Don and Mike Kounas; and 1 sister, Nicoleta Kounas.
