Richard “Dick” William Null, 75 of Sioux City, passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN following a brief illness with cancer.
Celebration of Dick’s life (visitation and funeral) will be at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Lakeport in Sioux City Iowa. The visitation will be on Sunday from 3:00-7:00 PM with a prayer service at 6:00 PM. The family will be present from 4:00 – 7:00 PM. The funeral service will be at 1:00 PM on Monday. Rev. Russell Senstad and Rev. David Zirpel will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel.
Dick was born March 7, 1941 in Sheldon, IA, the son of Russell and Esther (Raveling) Null. He grew up in Aurelia , Harlan, and LeMars. As a youth, his little league baseball team went to the Nationals. Dick graduated from LeMars Community High School where he competed in football, basketball, track, and golf. He enjoyed playing in many golf tournaments in Northwest Iowa. He graduated from Morningside College where he played football and was a member of the golf team. He was asked to coach the Morningside freshman football team as a senior after an injury prevented him from playing. He received a master’s degree from Drake University.
Dick married Janice Luksan May 5, 1962 in Hinton, IA. He was a teacher and a coach at Lakeview – Auburn High School and Albert City-Truesdale High School. In 1966, the couple moved to Rock Rapids where Dick began his career at Central Lyon as a Biology teacher, Athletic Director, and Head football coach. They won 193 games including a 38 game winning streak and a Class 2A state championship in 1976 and 1977. Dick was named to the Central Lyon Hall of Fame in 1977 and to the Iowa Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1982. He was also named to the Iowa High School Athletic Director Association Hall of Fame. He was honored to coach at the high school all-star Shrine Bowl in 1978 as an assistant and as the head coach in 1984. He touched the lives of many young people.
Jan and Dick were married for 54 years and had two children and 5 grandchildren. Dick was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. He was a fan of Morningside Mustangs and the St. Louis Cardinals. Dick and Jan enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren and attending their activities. He enjoyed taking care of his yard, reading, watching sports on TV, walking and spending time with his wife, and going to coffee with his coffee group.
Survivors include his wife Janice “Jan” Null of Sioux City; 2 children: Michael “Mike” Null and his wife Kim of O’Fallon, MO, Jenny Stephens and her husband Ross of Sioux City; his brother: Roger Null and his wife Sharon of Wentzville, MO; 5 grandchildren: Nichole Null, Allison Null, Mitch Null, Jake Stephens and Joshua “JJ” Stephens.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Lawrence.
