Leon V. Harbeck, 89 of Sioux City, passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2016, after a long battle with heart disease. Funeral Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Reverend Liz Tucker, of Whitfield United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites offered by United States Naval Reserve. www.meyerbroschapels.com Leon was born in Sioux City on February 6, 1928 and lived here all his life. He was the son of Chester and Nina (Steele) Harbeck. He attended and graduated from east High school, where he threw the shotput and discus and made many lifelong friends. Leon joined the Army and was in the Military Police from 1946-1948.
After his Army service he returned to Sioux City and attended Morningside College where he graduated. Following graduation, he sold real estate for John Call Realty and then worked for the U.S. Postal Service before joining the Toy National Bank, where he worked for 23 years until his retirement as Vice President of the Real Estate Department. Leon was a talented and avid handball player and had years of friendly but fierce competition at the Sioux City YMCA until injuries made him quit playing.
Leon cherished his relationships with his friends and his immediate and extended family. He organized the Teal/Steele family reunions for years and always looked forward to getting the family together. He also was a car fanatic and loved to take road trips, especially to Colorado.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years Barb, children Randy of Portland OR, Kirk (Denise) of Portland OR, Rob (Laura) of Portland OR, Julie of Sioux City; grandchildren Chad, Adam, Amy, Rachel, Ezra, Sedale, Grace and Spencer; great-grandchildren Myloh and Giovanni, and brother Don of Sioux City.
