Richard D. Hartnett

Richard D. Hartnett, 84 of Sioux City passed away on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at the Holy Spirit Retirement Home after a 12 year battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum. Father Daniel Rupp will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:00 – 11:00 A. M. Saturday at the Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Richard was born August 17, 1932 in Sioux City; he was the son of Daniel E. and Helen A. (Thompson) Hartnett. Richard grew up in Sioux City, he attended Sacred Heart Grade School, Trinity High School and then graduated with the first graduating class from Heelan High School in 1950. He attended the University of South Dakota and was a member of the Phi Delta Pi Fraternity. In 1952, Richard was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorable discharged in 1954.

After the war, Richard returned to Sioux City and graduated from Morningside College with a degree in history.

Richard married Kathryn Walsh in 1960 in Sioux City and she passed away in 2011.

Richard was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. He was an avid reader and enjoyed reading about history.

Survivors include his children: Daniel Patrick Hartnett and Mary Clare Hartnett both of Sioux City; 4 grandchildren: Katherine Hartnett, Daniel Edward Hartnett, John Patrick Hartnett and Richard James Hartnett.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be directed to the Carmelite Monastery.
