Carter J. Holman

August 20, 1938 — October 18, 2016

Carter J. Holman, D.D.S., of Dakota Dunes, SD passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at a Sioux City hospital at the age of 78.

Services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday at the First United Methodist Church with Mr. Neil Peck, C.L.P., officiating.  Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Carter was born August 20, 1938 in Sioux City; he was the son of Currier J. and Lucille “Tab” (Sve) Holman. Carter grew up in Sioux City and on family farms in and around Sloan and Salix Iowa. He was a graduate of Shattuck Military Academy in Faribault, MN. He attended the University of Iowa where he received both his undergraduate degree and his Doctorate in Dental Science degree.

Carter married Corinne A. Boe on August 23, 1961 at the First United Methodist Church in Sioux City. After their wedding, Carter served as a Captain in the United States Army and was assigned to the Dental Corp at Fort Hood, TX.  Following his military service they moved to Walnut Creek, CA. where Dr. Holman practiced dentistry before retiring and returning to Siouxland to be closer to family and his beloved Lake Okoboji.

Carter was first and foremost a dedicated family man, fiercely loyal and protective of his wife and kids and grandsons.  Carter was an avid rockhound; really chasing a life-long dream of being a geologist.  He collected rocks, minerals and all manner of jewelry featuring rocks and minerals.  He loved the outdoors. Whether in his exotic cactus garden in California or at the family cabin at Lake Okoboji; working in the yard was his sanctuary. If he wasn't in the yard he was either driving up to Edgar's for ice cream in his Corvette, or cheering on the Green Bay Packers.

Survivors include his wife Corinne of Dakota Dunes, SD; 2 children: Christian Holman and his wife Margaret of Sioux City and Tiffany Holman of LeMars, IA; 2 grandsons: Connor and Hiatt.

Carter was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Chapin Holman.

Memorials may be directed to the Disabled Veterans National Foundation dvnf.org or the Nature Conservancy nature.org.
