Dakota Dunes, South Dakota – Howard Donald Skidmore, 86, of Dakota Dunes, SD formerly of San Diego, CA and Cambridge, ID, died October 18, 2016, at his residence.

Abiding by Howard’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.  Visitation will be Thursday, October 27, 2016 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City.  Pastor Bob Rook of Peace Reformed Church will officiate.  Interment and a memorial service will be held at a later date at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, Point Loma, San Diego, CA.  

Howard was born on April 4, 1930 in Sioux City, IA to Sidney and Mable (Plantz) Skidmore.  Howard completed his education in Sioux City graduating from Central High School in 1948 where he participated in track, basketball and football.

Howard joined the Navy on October 23, 1950 and was honorably discharged on August 23, 1954.  He was stationed at the Naval base in San Diego where he met and married Carol Mae Thompson.  There were blessed with a long marriage, raising three children.

Howard operated a Real Estate development business in San Diego.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman but his main passion was serving the Lord Jesus Christ.  He had been a life-long member of the Evangelical Covenant Church until joining Peace Reformed Church in 2016.  He had been a charter member of two Covenant churches and was active in leadership.

Following the passing of his wife, Carol, Howard returned to Sioux City, IA where he renewed a teenage friendship with and married Doris Eberle on July 11, 2004.  They made their home in Dakota Dunes, SD until his passing.

Howard is survived by his wife, Doris Skidmore of Dakota Dunes, SD; son, Howard Skidmore II of Cambridge, ID; two daughters: Christine Kay Sims (Richard) of Denver, CO and Deborah Carol Wilde (Rick) of McCall, ID; one sister, Shirley Holley (Alvin) of Lodi, CA.  Also, daughter and son-in-law, Shelley and Clifford Olson of Sioux City, IA; son, Victor Eberle of Sioux Falls, SD; brother-in-law, Harold Bergstrom of Omaha, NE; sister-in-law, Mary Skidmore of Sioux Falls, SD; eleven grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Sidney Skidmore and Harold Skidmore; and two sisters: Ruby Casey and Opal Buchanan.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland and/or Peace Reformed Church.  A special thank you to the Hospice nurses who lovingly cared for Howard.
