Chleo John Weins

June 20, 1925 — October 14, 2016

Chleo J. Weins, 91, of Sioux City died Friday, October 14, 2016 at his residence.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 29, 2016, at First Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Ryan Dowell Baum officiating.  Chleo’s family will receive family and friends one hour prior to service at church. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is handling arrangements. Mr. Weins was born on June 20, 1925 in Sioux City, the son of August J. and Anna (Schunneman) Weins. He graduated from Central High School in 1943, where he was a 9-letter winner in the sports of football, basketball and track, and was also president of his graduation class. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945, and then attended Morningside College, graduating in 1949. He was awarded a Master’s Degree from the University of South Dakota and did further graduate study at the University of Colorado during the 1957-1958 school year.

On June 17, 1949, Chleo was united in marriage with Mary Jo Briggs at First Congregational Church. Mary Jo died Dec. 24, 2014 in Sioux City.

After graduation from college, Chleo taught math and science at Allen, NE for one semester and then was employed by the Sioux City Community School District for 37 years, retiring in 1986. He was a teacher at West Junior and Central High Schools, an Assistant Principal at North High School and a Principal at North Junior High School and the Central Campus.

Mr. Weins was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ. He was a life member of the National Education Association, and a member of Landmark Lodge No. 103, A.F. and A.M., the Sioux City Scottish Rite, and the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple. He was also a member of the Shrine Chanters and the Sioux City Retired Educators Unit. He was a past president of the Sioux City School Administrators Association.

Survivors include two sons, John B. Weins of Loveland, CO and Richard W. (Anna) Weins of Albuquerque, NM; two sisters-in-law, Muriel Briggs of Boulder, CO and June Weins of Sioux City; four nieces, Barbara (Jim) Johnson of Boulder, CO, Suzanne (Jim) Pfeister of Sioux City, Kathy Weins of Lincoln, NE and Lindsey (Jay) Hall of Morton, IL; and two nephews, William L. (Julie) Briggs and Roger P. (Mary Ann) Briggs both of Boulder, CO.  He is also survived by a very special family, John and Darla Bauer and their children, Nicholas, Andrew (Katie), Nathan, Samuel, Josias and CeCe of Sioux City.

Chleo was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a brother, Nile A. (June) Weins; a brother-in-law, William E. Briggs; and a nephew, William N. Weins.
