Sioux City, IA – John L. Mazur, 96, of Sioux City, IA died Friday, October 7, 2016, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 10, 2016, at Holy Spirit Catholic Chapel with Father Dennis Meinen officiating. Burial of the cremains will follow at Calvary Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Monday.
John was born on March 2, 1920, in Sioux City, the son of John and Nora Mazur. He attended St. Francis Catholic School and graduated from East High School in 1938. John enlisted in the Marine Corps on Jan. 4, 1942, and served in the South Pacific for two years, attaining rank of Chief Warrant Officer and then two years at bases in California and North Carolina. On his return to Sioux City in March 1946, John met Bernice Marecki at his uncle’s home (her godfather) and on Sept. 2, they were married at St. Francis Church.
John was employed at Rogers Electric Supplies as Purchasing Agent, retiring in 1984 as President and CEO.
John had been an active member at St. Francis Church where he helped coordinate the famed ‘Polish sausage dinners’ at the parish. His home became his hobby – no project was too difficult. Vacation travel with family was a summer delight.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice of Sioux City; sons: John (Nancy) of Parumph, Nevada, and Robert (Semakaleng) of Ames, Iowa; grandchildren: JC, Jeff, Michael Hesse, Neo, Thabisa, and step grandson Tsolo; great grandchildren: Zach, Isabel, and Maddox; sister, Marcia Weidenfeller of Plano, Texas; and multiple nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Sara Hesse; sisters: Rose Dziurawiec and Sophie Dziurawiec; brothers: Joe and Frank.
The family thanks Hospice of Sioux City and Holy Spirit Retirement Home for the wonderful care provided to John and his family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial contributions may be directed to a charity of your choice in memory of John Mazur.
