Maria G. Baumert, 81 of Sergeant Bluff, IA passed away on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at the Floyd House in Sergeant Bluff.
Funeral services will be at 9:00 A.M. Saturday at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Sioux City. Rev. Dimitri Tobias will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. Friday with the family present from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. and a Trisagion Service at 7:00 P.M. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Maria was born July 19, 1935 in Sparta, Greece; she was the daughter of George and Christanthe (Anastasakos) Melonakos. Maria grew up in Greece and came to the Tulsa, Ok as a teenager. She married John Sidney “Sid” Baumert in 1968 in Odessa, TX. They lived in Sioux City for many years and eventually moved to Sergeant Bluff. Sid passed away March 28, 2016 in Sergeant Bluff.
Maria worked at Fantles Clothing Store and later owned and operated Maria’s Café in Sioux City.
She was an active member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. The Church was a very important part of Maria’s life. She sang in the choir, helped with the Church dinners, and was a member of the Daughters of Penelope and Philoptohos. Maria also enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include her son, George Baumert (William Ford) of Roseville, CA; 2 brothers: Ted Melonakos (Ruby) of Howe, TX, Costa Melonakos (Eleni) of Katy, TX; a sister: Bessie Lagoudakis of Athens, Greece; several nieces and nephews.
Maria was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Sid, a brother Poneote Melonakos and a sister Aglaia Naypomihali
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Sid and Maria Baumert Scholarship Fund at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
