SIOUX CITY, IA | Stanley M. Swanson, 95, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2016 in Sioux City.
 
Funeral services will be 5:30 p.m. Monday, September 19, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. R. Paul Johnston officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Reserve at the conclusion of the service. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery on Tuesday morning. Visitation with the family present will be the hour prior to the service at the church. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is handling arrangements. Stanley was born July 1, 1921 on the family farm near Red Oak, IA.
He was the son of Alec and Ina (Peterson) Swanson. He graduated from Red Oak High School. He received his engineering degree from Iowa State University. During WWII, Stan attended Navy officer training school and became a “90-day wonder”. He was an officer on the destroyer, USS Macomb.
 
On June 20, 1947 he married Marion J. Wilson in Beresford, SD. Together they raised two daughters, Patty and Heidi. Marion passed away on July 14, 2004 in Sioux City.
 
Stan was an engineer with Iowa Public Service for 36 years. In 1972 he became vice president of major projects in charge of construction of the Port Neal 2, 3 and 4 power plants. He retired in 1983.
 
Stan genuinely loved people. He was a humble and generous man who loved his family and served his church and community. He was a longtime, active member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
 
He was on the founding board of the Sioux City Boys Club and served as its first president. He was also on the founding board of Western Iowa Tech Community College. Stan was a charter member of the Sioux City Cosmopolitan Club and served as its first president. He was a longtime board member of Sunrise Manor. Stan was an enthusiastic member of the Lewis and Clark Historical Association and the Swedish Vasa organization.
 
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Patty and Ed DenBeste and Heidi and Ralph Mertz all of Sioux City; six grandchildren, Amanda (Patrick) Beyer, John (Taylor) DenBeste, James (Kaitlyn) DenBeste, Emily (Jake) Byram, Dave Mertz (Megan Wolf) and Dan (Jessica) Mertz; three great-grandchildren, Lily, Gabby and Zac; and his dearest special friend, Arlynn O’Connor.                               
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marion, sister Dorothy and brother Wayne.
 
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
 
Memorials may be made in his name to the Sioux City Boys Club or Trinity Lutheran Church.

A BBQ supper celebrating Stan’s 95 years will be served after the service in the church hall.
