Duane L. Meier

Duane Meier, 80 of Sioux City, passed away on Monday, September 12, 2016 at his home comforted by family. A Celebration of Life Service will be at 6:00 p.m. Friday, September 16, 2016 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel led by Carol Kelzer with a meal to follow. Visitation, with the family present, will be at 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home Friday evening.

Duane Leo Meier was born November 28th, 1935 in Sioux City IA and raised in South Sioux City, Nebraska. He attended Catholic Schools and spent much of his spare time working for the family business of Meier's Grocery on 21st and Dakota Avenue. After graduation from Heelan High School in 1953 Duane enlisted in the United States Marine Corp (Full Time) and also served in the Marine Corps Reserve where he was trained as an Aviation Electronics Technician from 1953 to 1961 located in South Korea, Japan & Lincoln NE. He was a proud Marine that if challenged would still recite the Marine Hymn of Halls of Montezuma. After leaving the Marines Duane attended the University of Nebraska before settling into a career with the United States Post Office. Duane married the love of his life Barbara Francis Morgan and they were married for 58 beautiful years. Out of this union five children, seven grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Duane retired from the Post Office after 32 years of service and achieved the position of Superintendent of Carriers and Collections. Upon retiring Duane worked at many of the local casinos from 1992-2015 as a game dealer. Duane loved to work and valued his relationships with his coworkers and friends. Duane's favorite past time was spending time with family and grandchildren. Duane was always holding a grandbaby and was a natural teacher who inspired those around him to be interested and curious. A humble man, Duane was welcoming to all, and did what he said he was going to do, and never spoke badly of others. He was brave and never complained even at the end. He will be missed.

Duane is survived by his wife Barbara (Morgan) Meier; Sister Susan Meier & Richard Tilson; children Khristina Meier Klein, Will & Tonya (Henry)Meier, John & Amy (Richardson) Meier, and Michael Meier; grandchildren Joseph Schneiders, Jenny Schneiders & Chad Ballard, Lexie Klein, Tony & Lina Crow, Morgan Meier, Jade Meier & Josh Montagne, and Whitney Meier; eleven great-grandchildren that include: Aiden, Owen, Hudson, Chaylea, Darrion, Jaydon, Joshua, Tatum, Anavae , Jetta & Lennex.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph & Helen Meier, siblings Darlene Koll, Beverly Renfro, Jack Meier, Greg Meier, and a son Daniel Meier.
