Scott Julius Smith

Scott Julius Smith, 82 of Jefferson, SD passed away on Friday, September 9, 2016 at his residence after an extended illness.

 

There will be a memorial Mass at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Rev. Msgr. R. Mark Duchaine will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 9:30 until 10:30 A.M. Tuesday at the Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Scott was born July 10, 1934 in Sioux City; the son of Ira and Emma (Trasovech) Smith. He grew up in Sioux City, attending public schools, graduating from East High School in 1952. Scott graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1956 where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army at Ft. Lee, VA and Giessen, Germany, and continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserves until he was honorably discharged in 1964.

 

Scott married Mary Jo McDonald August 27, 1955 in Sioux City. To this union five children were born: Keley, Scott, Brian, Patrick and Molly.

 

He was a stockbroker in Sioux City for more than 40 years.

 

He loved his wife of 61 years, his family, the outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing, and the University of South Dakota Coyote football. Scott was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

 

Survivors include his wife Mary Jo of Jefferson, SD; his children: Keley Smith-Keller (Gary) of Rapid City, SD, Scott Matthew Smith of Denver, CO, Brian Smith (Leslie) of Silverthorne, CO, Patrick Smith (Suzanne) of Lake Barrington, IL and Molly Smith (Steve Ipswitch) of Deadwood, SD; five grandchildren: Garrett Smith Keller (fiancé Taylor Hatting), Natalie Smith, Hannah Smith, Rachel Smith and Dylan Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Scott was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Diane Anderl.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Siouxland or the June E. Nylen Cancer Center.

 

The family would like to thank all of the staff of Hospice of Siouxland, the June E. Nylen Cancer Center, the Oncology Unit and the Ambulatory Center at Mercy Medical Center, as well as all of the Life Serve Blood Donors.
