Daniel L. Wurth

October 9, 1945 — July 1, 2016

Daniel Lawrence Wurth, 70, of Sioux City passed away Friday, July 1, 2016 at his home. He endured a long fight with cancer but faced each day with strength, courage and conviction. He was wrapped in the loving arms of his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, Iowa, with the Rev. Bill McCarthy as celebrant and the Rev. David Hemann as concelebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery at Remsen. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City.

Dan was born Oct. 9, 1945, in Remsen, Iowa. He was the only son of Wilfred and Mary Wurth. He grew up on a farm in Remsen, graduating from St. Mary’s High School.

He married Peg Ruden on Sept. 28, 1974. They shared 41 years of life, love, and travels together. Dan farmed with his father until 1969. He began his employment with Missouri Valley Steel in 1970 following the completion of his studies at Chicago Technical College. Later, he led Midwest Structural Detailing until his retirement in 2011.

Dan was a man of all seasons. He spent his formative years on the family farm, constantly working with his hands and applying his aptitude for creativity and design by contributing to the farm and building his own toys. Dan was able to apply these skills toward a rewarding career through his knowledge of business and hard work. The fruits of Dan’s labor are evident in his meticulous design of the family homestead, where he and Peg lived and spent many dedicated hours together tending to the landscape and garden. The only thing Dan enjoyed more than a job well done was to share the bounty of the harvest of their garden with family and friends.

Throughout Dan’s life, he enjoyed all aspects of nature, from fishing and hunting to bird watching to gardening. He instilled in his children and grandchildren the value of hard work and his love of nature. He relaxed by hosting family and friends, sharing stories, while enjoying the ‘little corner of heaven’ that he and Peg created.

One of his biggest passions was following his Kentucky Wildcats basketball team. Dan, Peg and family enjoyed countless games together, traveling to see them play across the country. There was not a time of the year that Dan was not following, supporting, or enthusiastically discussing his Wildcats.

Dan is survived by his wife, Peg; his children, Russell (Georjeana) of Longmont, Colo., Darla (Jeff Swanson) of Cedar Park, Texas, Kevin of Washington, D.C., and Doug (Beth) of Johnston, Iowa; and grandchildren, Daniel, Georgianna, Matthew and Joseph of Longmont, Colo.; Carly and Bennett of Cedar Park, Texas, and Jackson and Andreas of Johnston, Iowa.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Wilfred and Mary; and his sister, Judy.

Memorials suggested are Trinity Heights in Sioux City, and Hope Lodge in Rochester, MN.
