Vernon Paul Parmelee, 82 of Sioux City passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in LeMars after a long illness of Parkinson’s disease.
Services will be at 10:00 A.M. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Frank Baron will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery with military rites conducted by the U.S. Marines. Following the graveside services everyone is invited to Congregation Beth Shalom, 815-38th St., Sioux City for a meal of condolence.
Vernon was born June 30, 1933 in South Sioux City, NE; he was the son of Raymond and Rose (Martin) Parmelee. Vernon grew up in South Sioux City and graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1951. He married Virginia Conlon October 9, 1952. Vernon served in the U.S. Marines from 1953 to 1955.
Vernon worked with his father at the Sullivan Commission Co in the Stockyards and later worked for Swift & Co.
He graduated from Morningside College in 1978 with a degree in education and received his master’s degree from the University of South Dakota.
Vernon was a teacher, educator and counselor starting out working at Anthon – Oto School. He was a counselor at the Winnebago, Macy and Walthill Schools and then taught as WIT. Vernon was a teacher and counselor for K - 5 students in the Sioux City Community Schools District for many years. He also coached girls softball, basketball and track. He was the co-founder of the SYA Program and along with John Samore founded the Sioux Valley Track Club.
Vernon was a lifelong member of the YMCA and loved to play handball. He along with his father and children played in many handball tournaments. Vernon was loved and respected by many for his work with youth athletics in the Siouxland area.
Vernon is survived by his children: Patricia Parmelee of Sioux City, Paula R. Parmelee of Elk Point, SD, Megan Herfel of Petaluma, CA, Paul Parmelee (Deb) of LeMars, IA, Penny Smith of Hemet, CA, Phillip Parmelee (Sandy) of Jefferson, SD, and Preston Parmelee (Stephanie) of Tea, SD; his sister: Virginia Davenport of South Sioux City, NE; 37 grandchildren and 42 great grandchildren.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, 2 daughters Pamela and Paige, an infant son P.C. Parmelee, and infant brother Raymond and 2 grandsons Shannon and Abraham.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family for charities chosen by the family.
