Darrell D. Young

December 28, 1933 — June 21, 2016

SIOUX CITY | Darrell D. Young, 82, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Whitfield United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Liz Tucker officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Darrell was born on Dec. 28, 1933, in rural Homer, Neb., the son of Lyle A. and Eleanor (Longwell) Young. He grew up in Homer and graduated from Homer High School. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict and was presented an award on behalf of the U.S. government for his wartime service by Congressman Tom Latham. In 1964, Darrell graduated from Morningside College.

On Aug. 25, 1955, Darrell married Donna Rae Fredrickson. They raised three children, Crystal, Cindy and Dan. Donna passed away on May 3, 1993. He later married Beatrice (Nelson) Rusley on Feb. 14, 1995. Darrell was director of purchasing for Terra Chemicals International Inc. and retired in 1993 after 28 years of service. Prior to that he worked for the city of Sioux City in the water department.

Darrell was a longtime member of Whitfield United Methodist Church, the American Legion Monahan Post 64 and the V.F.W. Sergeant Floyd Post 1974.

Darrell loved the outdoors. He enjoyed working in his garden and his rose beds. It was not unusual to see him on his riding lawn mower every day. He had a passion for animals and dearly loved his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Bea Young; his children, Crystal (Dennis) Benson of Sioux City, Cindy (Mike) Stodden of Omaha, and Dan (Chris) Young of Kansas City, Kan.; his grandchildren, Chad (Mary), Sarah (Richie), Trevor (Amy), Josheb, Matthew, Leah, Megan (Paul), Lindsay, Christi (John), Jake and Kayla; his great-grandchildren, Mercedes, Jonathan, Oliver, Claire, Ava, Isaac and Connor; his sisters, Marilyn Jacobsen and Linda Roschewski; his sister-in-law, Judy Loraditch; and nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by his stepchildren, Joyce (Ron) Dammer of Mountain Lake, Minn., and Marta (Wayne) Rusley-Parker of Jonesboro, Ark.; his stepgrandchildren, Blake (Nicki), Mitchell (Taylor), Kyle, Stacy (Mike), Shannon (Wayne), Tara, Ashley, Brody (Lola), Melanie (Ben), Maureen (Lauren), Tyler (Betsy), Justin (Kendall); and his great-stepgrandchildren, Lillian, Mason, Makena, Julia, Tate, Kassidy, Ben, Jacob, Kendall, Emma, Kiera, Emmeric, Victor, Bailey and Harper.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Donna; brother, Tom Young; and stepson, Dave Rusley.

Pallbearers will be Chad, Trevor, Josheb and Matthew Benson, Jacob Young and Paul Bratetic. Honorary pallbearers will be Blake and Mitch Batty, Brody McClaren, Tyler and Justin Rusley.
