Sylvester J. “Sy” Rodgers, 89 of Dakota Dunes, SD went home to be with his Lord & Savior on Wednesday, June 1, 2016.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church 5500 Military Road in Sioux City. Rev. Msgr. Mark Duchaine will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. Sunday with the family present from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. and a Vigil service at 7:00 P.M. all at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Sy was born November 2, 1926 in Sioux City; he was raised by Robert and Vivian (Flannery) Rodgers. Sy graduated from Elk Point High School and then worked a few years in the meat packing industry. His true calling was retail sales and he worked for Sears & Roebuck for 37 years. Sy was born for retail and he could sell an Eskimo a refrigerator.
Sy married his beautiful bride, Julia Mary Huss on October 17, 1953. To this union, 8 children were born.
Julia passed away April 9, 1993. He later married his second beautiful wife, Marilyn Immele on June 14, 1997. They spent many years traveling this wonderful country. Marilyn is a gift sent from God for all of us, but especially for Dad.
Sy was a very active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a long standing member of the choir. He was a charter member of the Siouxland Discovery Chorus and was very active in the Siouxland Chapter. Sy was also a member of the 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus. He volunteered at the Queen of Peace for 20 years.
Sy loved playing outdoor games with his children. He always had a song in his heart and loved life to the fullest.
Survivors include his wife Marilyn of Dakota Dunes, SD; 6 children: Maureen Hinds (Steve) of DeSoto, TX, Matt Rodgers of Sioux City, Lisa Bastida (Jesus) of Middleton, WI, Steve Rodgers of Sioux City, Mary Cox (Humphrey) of Elk Point, SD and James Rodgers (Sara) of Centennial, CO. Sy is also survived by Marilyn’s children: Joe Immele (Darla), Bruce Immele (Barbara), Anne Vakulskas (Ed), Michael Immele and Kathleen Pearson; 7 grandchildren: Justin Hinds, Jared Hinds (Cynthia), Nicholas Cox (Erin) , Sean Cox, Jessica Cox, Rheanna Jenness (Blake) and Lee Lange; 4 great grandchildren: Jordan, Jaden and Landen Jenness and Parker Cheever; 3 sisters: Theresa Bouchard, Rudi Haug (Arnie), Marietta Tierney (Richard).
Sy was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Julia Mary Sylvester; two sons: Edward and Kelly; two sisters: Doris Fejfar and Geraldine Vlasek.
