Jim Goergen, 83, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, April 30, 2016 at a local care center.
Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 6, 2016 at Nativity Catholic Church with Father Steven McLoud officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, May 5, 2016 from 4:00-8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:00-8:00 P.M. and a Vigil Service at 7:00 P.M. at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Jim was born December 13, 1932 in Goodwin, NE to Ed and Mary (Heenan) Goergen. He attended grade school in Jackson, NE and high school at Trinity High School, graduating from Heelan High School in 1950. Jim was an avid baseball fan and player and signed with the New York Yankees in February of 1951 playing for McAlister, OK; in the Sooner State League in Duluth, MN and the Northern League in Iola, KS. Jim was released from the Yankees in 1952 and enlisted in the US Air Force with her best friend “Rink” McGuire. He served in Trenton, NJ, Korea, and Gary Air Force Base in San Marcos, TX.
Jim married Blanche Schreiber on April 17, 1955. Jim received his honorable discharge from service in 1956 and returned to Sioux City to attend Morningside College. Upon the death of his father-in-law he purchased the Park Bowl Bowling Lanes with his brother-in-law, Bernie Schreiber.
After a fire destroyed the Park Bowl in 1987, Jim and Blanche moved to Midland, MI where they purchased the Northern Lanes. In 1993 Jim and Blanche retired to Lake Okoboji where their legacy became entertaining family and friends with fabulous meals and boat rides. In July 2015, Jim and Blanche moved back to Sioux City.
Jim was an avid Notre Dame fan and was thrilled to attend a few football games. He was a proud and loyal Detroit Tiger and Detroit Lion fan and loved watching his grandchildren play their respective sports.
Survived by wife of 61 years, Blanche; his brother, Gene (Theresa); children: Rick (Nickee) of Midland, MI, Bo (and his significant other, Kim) of Midland, MI, Sherri (Jim) Rossiter of Sioux City, Jeff (Patti) of Golden, Co; and Shelley of Omaha, NE; Grandchildren: Alena, Ben, Jake, Tyler, Asjia, Nate, Nicole, Brady, Lindsay, Joe, and Isaac; 9 great grandchildren; and many in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Donald, and sisters Madeline McCormick and Peggy McKinley.
