Javier Fuentes, 83, of Sioux City passed away on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Javier fought Parkinson disease for many years and battled cancer for the last 3 years.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 5, 2016 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial of his cremains will be at a later date in the Logan Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Javier was born in Pueblo, Mexico to Antonio and Esther Fuentes. He immigrated to the United States in 1958. He became a Naturalized Citizen in 1966. Javier married Norma Jean Linton in 1961. He worked at Armour & Company for many years. He retired from Department of Human Services in 1998.
He was a former member of the Human Rights Commission. He received a community Leadership award from the Siouxland Unidad Latina in 2007.
Javier’s passion was soccer. For many years he coached a girl’s club team and then as the assistant West High girls’ soccer coach . Even after he became disabled he was passionate about attending the West High Soccer Games.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years Norma Fuentes. Eight children: Earl and Teri Fuentes of Fort Worth Texas, Diana Sweat of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Cheryl and Scott Moss of Sioux Falls, SD, Dolores and David Guest , Nancy and Brian Gustavson, Monica and Troy Waldon , all of Sioux City, Iowa. Gary Fuentes of Jefferson, SD and Jennifer Fuentes and her fiancé Constantine Klimiades of Sioux City.
He loved spending time with his 16 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Javier was preceded in death by his parents, and a son-in-law Billy Sweat.
