Barbara A. Shay

Barbara A. Shay, 78 of Sioux City passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at a Sioux City hospital.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Thursday at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. Wednesday with the family present from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. There will be a rosary recited at 6:30 P.M. and a vigil service at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Barbara was born July 15, 1937 in Sioux City; she was the daughter of John and Hannah (Meier) Hoing. Barbara grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Heelan High School in 1955. She attended St. Vincent School of Nursing and then worked at St. Vincent Hospital a short time before moving to Chicago, IL.

Barbara returned to Sioux City and worked at St. Joseph Hospital and Mercy Hospital for over 30 years.

Barbara married John Edward Shay and he passed away in February of 1985.

Barbara was a member of St Boniface Catholic Church. She enjoyed reading and gardening and did volunteer work at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center.

Survivors include her 5 children: Gabrielle Shay of Sioux City, Sean Shay of Sioux City, Marian Hollingshead (Troy Olson) of Jefferson, SD, Brennan Shay (Kelly) of Tennessee Colony, TX, Michael Shay (Chi Phan Shay) of Sioux City; 1 brother: Francis Hoing of Omaha, NE; 1 sister: Joan Jacquin of Lenexa, KS; 7 grandchildren: Samantha Mackey (Tom), Sarah Jensen (Justin), Chris Shay, Alexander Shay, Kolemann Shay, Frances Shay and Danny Shay; 2 great grandchildren: Kale Mackey and Alayna Jensen.
