John Sidney “Sid” Baumert, 82, of Sergeant Bluff, IA passed away on Monday, March 28, 2016 at Embassy Care Center in Sergeant Bluff, IA. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church with Father Dimitri Tobias officiating. Military graveside honors will be provided by the U.S. Army Reserves in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 4-8 p.m. with family present from 6-8 p.m. and a Trisagion service will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Sid was born on August 13, 1933 in Shawnee, OK to John M. Baumert and Edith (Reid) Baumert. He graduated from Shawnee High School in 1950 where he excelled in sports, especially football. He attended Oklahoma Baptist University until his enlistment in the U.S. Army serving in Korea. When he returned home he earned his Business Degree.
He found employment in management with Shell Oil, Getty Oil and finally Texaco Oil. Through the years he owned rental properties and an Amoco Truck Stop and Convenience Store.
Sid was united in marriage to Maria G. Melonakos in Odessa, TX. They lived in Sioux City for many years eventually moving to Sergeant Bluff where they raised their son George Baumert.
After retirement, Sid was an avid golfer and enjoyed watching college football. He looked forward to having coffee with his friends and telling stories from the past.
Sid was a Mason and Shriner serving on the Divan of Abu Bekr Shrine Temple. He was also a member of the V.F.W., America Legion, American Veteran’s and Elks Lodge. He was a faithful member of Holy Trinity Greek Church.
He is survived by his wife Maria Baumert of Sergeant Bluff, IA; son George Baumert of Sacramento, CA; brother Charles Baumert of Denver, CO and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Sid’s favorite charity, The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox College Scholarship Fund.
