Marie Whitesell

Marie "Red" Whitesell, 88 of Sioux City passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at her residence after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Rev. Catie Newman will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

 

Marie was born February 8, 1928 in Rock Valley, IA; she was the daughter of Dick and Julia (Mares) Steck. Marie grew up in Rock Valley and in Sioux City. She married Leslie Whitesell January 26, 1949 in Elk Point, SD. He passed away in 1994 in Sioux City.

 

Marie was a cook and worked at St. Joseph Hospital, St. Vincent Hospital and Embassy Rehab and Care Center. She was a lifetime member of American Legion Monahan Post # 64 Auxiliary. Marie enjoyed camping, gardening and dancing.

 

Survivors include her 3 daughters: Mary Walker (Mark) of Sioux City, Julie Shearn (Rick) of Sioux City, Gloria Harding (Lance) of South Sioux City, NE; 2 adopted daughters: Connie Wente (Mike) and Ellen Church all of South Sioux City, NE; her sister: Lillian Thomas of Sioux City; 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Marie is also survived by many caring nieces and nephews.

 

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leslie, 2 brothers Jack and Richard and a grandson Paul.
