Mary M. Vuncannon

August 30, 1938 — March 16, 2016

Mary M. “Marcy” Vuncannon, 77, of Sioux City passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 following a brave battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be at 7:00 P.M. Monday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Visitation with the family present will be from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Marcy was born in Cherokee on August 30, 1938. Her father, Curtis Johnson, worked for the railroad and her mother, Edna (Fessler) Johnson, sold homemade cakes. She had two younger brothers, Curtis, Jr. “Bud” and Bruce.

A strong athlete, Marcy participated in softball, swimming, and track, including running events, hurdles, and the long jump. She enjoyed anything that involved running. Her first jobs included babysitting and newspaper delivery. Her family moved to Sioux City where she finished high school at Central High School.

She married Larry Vuncannon on December 1, 1956 in Sioux City. Larry was active duty Air Force and together they traveled the world while being stationed in Sioux City, IA; Scullthorp, England; Homestead, FL; Bent Waters, England; Sumnter, SC; Hampton, VA; Panama City, FL; and finally back to Sioux City where Larry retired. While being stationed at different places, Marcy held various jobs, including grading potatoes and tomatoes for selling quality. She also kept busy playing softball in several leagues with other women who lived in base housing.

She attended some college courses at Western Iowa Tech Community College before working at the Abu Bekr Shriner’s office for 18 years doing clerical work. She took an early retirement to care for her ailing mother but later managed two of her own apartment buildings.

In addition to softball and running, some of her other hobbies included gardening, reading, refinishing old furniture, roller skating, singing, playing guitar, painting, and other art work. She started skiing at age 50 and purchased a motorcycle at age 75. She also played guitar and sang in a few bands with performances mostly at retirement homes.

Marcy will be remembered by her family and friends as a caring, friendly woman who was capable of doing absolutely anything and always there for her family and friends. She had a good heart and strong will that made her an inspiration to those around her.

Marcy is survived by her two children: Ken Vuncannon and Gail (Doug) Frank all of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Missy Frank, Jennifer (Jesse) Frank-Scherer, and Lacey (Wade) Oldenburg; and three great-grandchildren, Dylan (Missy) and Mckinsie and Emma (Lacey). And, her cat Stubby.

Marcy was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Bud and Bruce.
