Leo E. Carlson, Jr.

Leo E. Carlson, Jr. age 81 of Sioux City passed away on Monday, March 14, 2016 at a local care facility with his family by his side.

A celebration of Leo’s life will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, June 17, 2016 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com

Leo was born April 20, 1934 in Moline, IL; he was the son of Leo and Audrey (Pombert) Carlson, Sr. Leo grew up in Bettendorf and graduated from Bettendorf High School. He received his bachelor of science degree from Coe College and then did his graduate work at Ohio State University.

Leo married Shirley Lunde on September 15, 1956 in the Coe College Chapel in Cedar Rapids, IA. His career took them to Ohio, Wisconsin and Des Moines before settling in Sibley, IA where they raised their family. In 1982, they moved to Spirit Lake and in 2010 to Sioux City. Leo’s terrific sense of humor will be dearly missed by his family and everyone he met. In addition to his family and vacations they enjoyed, Leo loved the game of golf, especially when he played with his son, David.

Leo began his career with Brenton Bank in Urbandale, IA from 1958 to 1961. He served as Vice President and President of the First National Bank in Sibley from 1961 to 1982 and Lakes National Bank in Arnolds Park from 1982 until his retirement.

Leo served on the Sibley City Council, the Sibley Chamber of Commerce, as well as several bank boards. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Sibley, Rotary Club, and Masonic Temple. He served as treasurer of the Sibley Development Corporation and was instrumental in bringing the Chase Bag Company (now Coveris) to Sibley. He was named to the Governor’s Board and served as Chairman of the Transportation Committee. He also served on the committee to refurbish the Queen II at Lake Okoboji, and he was an honorary member of the Okoboji Navy.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Shirley, of Sioux City; 2 daughters: Mickie Hovel and her husband Shawn of Marshalltown, IA and Deb Smith and her husband Greg of Jefferson, SD; daughter-in-law: Jennifer Carlson Weller, LeClaire, IA; granddaughters: Erica (Tyson) Finders, Erin (Tyrone) Hoskins and Emily Greve; grandsons: Michael and Matthew Smith; great grandsons: Trenten, Ashten and Brenden Finders and Taven and Tate Hoskins.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved son: David Leo Carlson, a sister: DeEtte Duvall and a brother: John Carlson.

Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
