Margaret Holmes, age 89, of Sioux City, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, February 25, 2016, at a local hospital. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at the Church of All Nations. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Margaret H., daughter of Lawrence and Mary (Gristfeild) Miller, was born on August 30, 1926, in Alberta, Canada. She grew up in Yakima, Washington where she graduated from high school.
On July 7, 1946, Margaret was united in marriage with Henry Holmes in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. Two children were born to this union. The family settled in Sioux City, Iowa. Margaret was a stay at home mom until her children finished school. She then worked as a nurse’s aide in area nursing homes.
Margaret was a member of the Church of All Nations. Spending time with her pet dog Buddy and her cats Toby and Callie brought her great joy. She enjoyed reading, doing word searches, playing games, cards and dice, traveling and camping, car rides, being outside and gardening. Once in awhile, Margaret would stay up all night and watch scary movies with her granddaughter.
Margaret is survived by: a daughter Barbara Doren and husband Craig of Sioux City; a son William Holmes of Sioux City; her grandchildren: Tina Cunigan and husband Nathan; Janelle Modlin; Jessie Holmes and wife Amber; great-grandchildren: Nathan Braaten, Haylie Braaten, Michael Cunigan, Rebecca Cunigan and Cheyenne Steemken; sisters Beverly Miller and Betty Rohrich, both of Yakima, Washington; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband Henry; two brothers William Sloan and Norman Miller; and four sisters: Lillian Johnson, Vera Conrad, Laura Rakickas and Alice Perry.
