Alvin was born October 7, 1947 in Hartington, NE the son of Irvin and Hilaria (Koch) Dickes. He graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1966. Alvin married Janet Johnson-Graves on May 10, 1975 in South Sioux City. He worked for Flavorland, Floyd Valley, Siouxland Beef and John Morrell, and owned and operated Al’s Tree Service until his stroke in 2004. After his recovery, Alvin enjoyed working as a greeter at the South Sioux City Walmart. He always joked with the customers and asked if they brought their helmet because Walmart had “falling prices”.

Alvin’s passions in life were spending quality time with his family, especially his grandkids, his tree cutting business, cheering on his favorite team the Pittsburgh Steelers, having his daily coffee at Harvey’s Restaurant, and snuggling with his cat Casey. Alvin was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Halloween was his favorite Holiday and he always looked forward to seeing his grandkids in their costumes. Alvin was known for his great sense of humor and making everyone laugh by cracking jokes and doing crazy things, which he continued to do until his last day. One of his famous sayings was “Where would you be without a laugh.” He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
