SIOUX CITY | Spero “Speed” Harry Siganos, 89, of Sioux City passed away peacefully in his sleep Friday, Feb. 12, 2016, at his home.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, with the Rev. Dimitri Tobias officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, with a Trisagion service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.
Spero was born on Oct. 6, 1926, the son of Harry and Katina Siganos. He grew up in Sioux City, graduating from Central High School. Spero continued his education at Morningside College, where he received his B.S. degree in accounting and excelled running track and playing baseball. He served with the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Hawaii during World War II. Spero played amateur baseball for the Sioux City Investors and was invited to try out for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Spero married his wife, Helen Camaras on Sept. 15, 1957, in Sioux City, where they raised two sons, Steve and Stan, and one daughter, Kaye. He was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
Spero began his career as an accountant at the stockyards before finding his way as a cattle buyer. He loved the challenge and worked as a cattle buyer for over 30 years.
Spero loved telling jokes, playing cards and doing card tricks. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids play all of their sports.
Survivors include his wife, Helen; three children and their spouses, Steve and Melanie Siganos of Minneapolis, Minn., Stan and Jan Siganos of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Kaye Siganos and Rick Rudeen of Dakota Dunes, S.D.; six grandchildren, Greg Siganos and Kendy Walker, Sam and Jenna Siganos, Alexa “Lex” and Danny Rudeen (fianceé Kenzie Kuchera); two great-grandchildren, Mia and Ashton Walker; two sisters, Stella (Mike) Boosalis of Minneapolis, Minn., and Sophie (Marc) Abramson of Palo Alto, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Elaine Siganos of Wisconsin; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, George.
Memorials may be made in his name to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church or the athletic department at Morningside College.
