Dorothy Jean Walters

March 12, 1930 — February 8, 2016

SIOUX CITY | Dorothy Jean Walters, 85, of Sioux City, died Monday, Feb. 8, 2016 at a local hospital after a brief illness.

Services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, 2016 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday with the family present 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Dorothy Jean was born March 12, 1930 in Sioux City the daughter of Hans and Johanna (Trap) Petersen.

Doty was a seamstress for J.C. Penny and for Aalf’s Mfg. She also worked as a waitress for various restaurants, including the Convention Center.

On June 24, 1950 she married Daniel B. Walters in Sioux City. The couple lived in California for a short time, then moved to Long Lake near Park Rapids, MN from 1960 to 1961. The family then moved back to Sioux City. They also enjoyed many summers at Lake Belle Taine near Nevis, MN. Her husband died Sept. 14, 2002 in Park Rapids.  

Doty was an avid bingo player and enjoyed cake decorating. She was a great seamstress who made many of her family’s clothes. Most of all, Doty loved the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her 3 children and their spouse, Deb and Gary Peterson of Dakota City, NE, Daniel and Becky Walters of Walker, MN and Andrew and Toni Walters of Sioux City; 3 siblings and their spouses, Lois and John Ward, Donnie and Norma Petersen and Gary and Link Petersen all of Sioux City; brother-in-law, Jerry Stilwell of Moville, IA; sister-in-law, Carol Peterson of Sioux City; 8 grandchildren, Nicole (Jon) Saylor, Neisha (Keith) Hummel, Liz Walters, Josh (Kari) Walters, Katie Walters, Megan Walters, Madison Hoelker and Benjamin Walters; 10 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and 7 siblings.                     

Pallbearers will be Liz Walters, Megan Walters, Josh Walters, Ben Walters, Joel Stilwell, Keith Hummel and Jon Saylor. Honorary pallbearers will be Nicole Saylor, Neisha Hummel, Katie Walters and Madison Hoelker.
