Fern A. Held

Fern A. Held, 86 of Hinton, IA, passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2016, at a care facility in Sioux City.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton, IA. Rev. Steven Stoll will officiate. Burial will be at Floyd Valley Cemetery near Merrill, IA. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. Thursday with the family present from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. and a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. all at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Fern was born December 10, 1929, in Denison, IA; she was the daughter of John F., Sr., and Adelheid (Pautsch) Bielfeldt. Fern grew up in Denison and graduated from Denison High School in 1947. She graduated from the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in 1950.

On September 9, 1951, Fern married Clarence Held in Denison; he passed away June 9, 2009, in Sioux City.

Fern was a school nurse at the Hinton Community School for over 25 years, retiring in 1991.

Fern was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Iowa Nurses’ Association, the Lutheran Hospital Association, the Iowa School Nurses’ Association and was the first President of PACT. Fern enjoyed dancing, ladies’ golf leagues at Kingsley and Hinton, bowling leagues, and various card clubs.

Survivors include her children: Heidi (Bob) Berg of Norfolk, NE, Bruce (Barb) Held of Hinton, IA, Karen       (Leland) Hathaway of Turin, IA; a son-in-law: Dr. Frank Bever and his special friend Cindy Hanft of Coralville, IA; a sister: Ruby Sass of Loveland, CO; a brother: Glen Bielfeldt of Perry, IA; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Bielfeldt of Denison, IA; 6 grandchildren: Niki (Jon) Friessen, Lindsey (Jeremy) Moore, Brian (Andrea) Held, Stan (Karen) Johnson, Mary (Avery) Ma and Kaylee Hathaway; 12 great grandchildren: Gabbie, Cole and Ellie Friessen, Kenny, Sam, Shelby, Tate and Emmett Johnson, Raegan Moore, Aubrey Held, and Aurea and Eliot Ma.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents John and Adelheid, her husband Clarence, her daughter Marilyn who died Dec. 25, 2007, 3 brothers: Emil (Vernette) Bielfeldt, Johnny Bielfeldt, and Bernhard Bielfeldt, a sister, Ruth (Hans) Jess, a brother-in-law: LeRoy Sass, and a sister-in-law Phyllis Bielfeldt.

Memorials may be directed to the Hinton Community School Scholarship Fund or Trinity Lutheran Church.
