George Miller Jr. (“Jawsie”), 89, of Sioux City passed away on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Holy Spirit Retirement Home following a lengthy illness.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 30, 2016 at St. Boniface Catholic Church with Father Michael Erpelding officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, January 29, 2016 from 4-8 p.m. with family present from 6-8 p.m. and a vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m. followed by Military Honors by the U.S. Naval Reserves at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. George was born July 31, 1926 in Sioux City, IA. He was the son of George Karleusha Miller, Sr. and Bessie Potkonak Miller. He attended West Jr. High and Central High School. He married Mary Lou Cussen on May 21, 1949, in Sioux City. She died on December 17, 1982. He married Geneva (“Genie”) McGlauflin on September 18, 1984.
George was a lifelong resident of Sioux City and served in the U.S. Navy. He worked for Johnson Biscuit Company for six years, and then for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 1985. He was an avid softball fast pitch player for over 20 years playing on a team of fellow Post Office employees who were his friends. He coached grade school basketball at St. Boniface, once proudly taking the parochial city championship. George belonged to the St. Boniface Men’s Club, “Boys of 68”, and the South Sioux City, Nebraska Fraternal Order of Eagles, where he and Genie loved to dance. Everyone knew his big smile, jokes, and favorite song: “Blue Suede Shoes”. He also enjoyed golfing with friends during his retirement. He and Genie spent many winters in Harlingen, TX socializing and playing cards.
He is survived by his wife Geneva; his children: James (Kay) Miller of Minneapolis, MN, Diana (Bruce) Kingsbury of Ames, IA, Michael (Mary) Miller of Sioux City, IA, and Susan (Gail) Dupree of Mesquite, TX; his stepchildren: Michael (Becki) McGlauflin of Sioux City and Pam (Rod) Hulshof of Sioux Center, IA; his brother Don Miller of Sioux City; a sister-in-law Lucille Miller Harris of Sioux City; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law Derrill and Delores Graham of Sioux City; nine grandchildren; two great granddaughters; eight step grandchildren; and eight step great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his first wife Mary Lou, his parents, three brothers: Leonard, Robert, and Millord and his sister Kristine.
Pallbearers will be George’s grandsons: Ross Miller, Corey Dupree, Taylor Dupree, Ryan Hulshof, Corby McGlauflin, Eric McGlauflin, and Travis McGlauflin. Honorary pallbearers will be his granddaughters.
The family would like to thank the staff of Holy Spirit Retirement Home, Hospice of Siouxland, and Dr. Michael Jung for their care and kindness towards George and his family.
Memorials may be given in his name to: Hospice of Siouxland or the Woodbury County Commission of Veteran’s Affairs.
