Dorothy P. Dickman

SIOUX CITY | Dorothy P. Dodsley Dickman, 88, of Sioux City passed away at her home on Friday, Jan. 8, 2016.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Tom Murray officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Dorothy was born March 15, 1927, on the family farm near May City, Iowa, the daughter of William and Lillian Paling. The family moved to rural Lake Park, Iowa, where Dorothy graduated from Lake Park High School with the class of 1946. Dorothy played basketball all four years in high school, the team going to State once during her participation. After training from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, Dorothy taught at a country school between Harris and May City, Iowa. In 1948, she moved to Sioux City and worked for Security National Bank for one year. After that, she taught junior high school in Waterbury, Neb. She was then employed by Northwestern Bell Phone Co. for 35 years and took early retirement in 1983.

Dorothy was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Lake Park from 1938 to 1948. She then joined First Presbyterian Church in Sioux City, and was a member until her death. On Oct. 14 to Oct. 22, 2005, Dorothy along with other of her church members went to Gulfport, Miss., to do volunteer work for the disastrous flood, Katrina. In 1952, Dorothy married Robert Dodsley. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Business Women's Sorority for over 60 years. She enjoyed several years on the committee to choose the Trucker's Queen for the Sioux City Stockyards. Dorothy served on the board of directors at Telco Community Credit Union for 20 years.

Dorothy married Francis "Dick" Dickman on Feb. 14, 1992. She enjoyed her summer home on West Lake Okoboji for more than 60 years. She also loved to travel to Europe, the Caribbean, Japan and many other countries. She also loved traveling all over the U.S. During a late summer weekend prior to Labor Day, Dorothy enjoyed hosting in her Okoboji home her 1946 graduates and their spouses, who came from California, Illinois, Texas, Michigan and Arizona. 

Survivors include her husband, Dick; two daughters, Lorraine Jacobson and Lisa Parsons of Sioux City; grandchildren, Brenna Parsons of Seattle, Wash., Eli Parsons of Des Moines, Iowa, Luke Parsons, Larrisa (Tanner) Corbin and Joseph Jacobson, all of Sioux City; a great-grandson, Waylon Corbin; nieces and nephews, Kay Hedum, Barbara Keck, Tom and Betty Keck and Bob and Annamarie Keck; great nieces, Stacy and Jennifer; and great nephews, Travis (Jessica) Pratt of Holstein, Iowa, Gary Lee Pratt and Michael Robinson of Ft. Meyers, Fla., and Hazel Martin of Lancaster, Calif.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Dodsley; sister, Helen; brother, Robert; nieces, Pamela Robinson and Linda Pratt; and Bob Dodsley's sister, Dorothy and husband, Everett.
