Genevieve G. Johnson, 91, of Sioux City, passed away on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday at St. Thomas Orthodox Church. Rev. Fr. Lucas Rice will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Thomas Orthodox Cemetery in Graceland Park. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. Sunday with the family present from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. and a Trisagion Service at 7:00 P.M. all at the Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel.
Gen was born August 11, 1924 in Sioux City. She grew up in Anthon and graduated from Mapleton High School. Gen married Mearl Johnson on February 17, 1946 in Sioux City. Mearl was killed in action September 23, 1950 while serving his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Gen owned and operated her own income tax service for 25 years.
She was a longtime member of St. Thomas Orthodox Church. She served on the Church board as Treasurer, in the Altar Society and the Ladies Club. Gen enjoyed golfing at Floyd and Green Valley Golf Courses, reading, baking, crocheting, traveling and playing scrabble. Gen also enjoyed her pets.
Survivors include her daughters: Patricia Kitchens of Lawton, IA, Karen Peterson of Olathe, KS; 6 grandchildren: Richard Rosenbaum, Gena Rosenbaum, Angela Hendrickson, Kirsten Peterson, Hillary Ferrer (and Chris), Andrew Peterson; 5 great grandchildren; and, 1 great-great grandson.
Gen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mearl; her longtime partner, Ed Ness; sons-in- law: Gary Peterson and Allen Kitchens; her brothers and sisters; her dear friend, Annie Rosenbaum; and, her beloved cousin, Neva Bauer.
Pallbearers will be Richard Rosenbaum, Andrew Peterson, Pat Corey, Jim Bauer, Jeff Ness, Gerald Stevens; and, honorary pallbearer, Lyn Rosenbaum.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Thomas Orthodox Church, The Boy and Girls Home or the Breast Cancer Society.Visits: 10
