Duane “Duke” O’Hern, 78 of Sioux City passed away on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at his residence surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. Duke was born July 20, 1937 in Sioux City; he was the son of Russell and Clara (Kade) O’Hern. Duke graduated from East High School in 1955 and from Morningside College in 1963. He married his high school sweetheart, Caral Chamberlin July 19, 1956 in Monterey, CA.
Duke served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged on May 29, 1959 at Ft. Benning, GA with the rank of Sergeant.
After college, Duke was employed as a sales representative for Standard Oil in Omaha. He and his family returned to Sioux City where he was employed by Concrete Products Co. as a sales manager and later as vice president. He then was a realtor for 20 years with Joslin Realty.
Duke was a former member of the Sertoma Club, he was a member of the Morningside Masonic Lodge, # 615 A.F. & A.M, Sioux City Consistory, Abu Bekr Shrine and the White Horse Mounted Patrol. Duke was president of the Sioux City Construction League in 1985 and chairman of the Siouxland Home Show in 1981 and 1982.
Duke and Caral enjoyed traveling. They visited all 50 states in the U.S. and they vacationed in London, Scotland, Ireland, Italy and Spain. They took several cruises on various cruise lines.
Duke loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Caral of Sioux City; his children: Sandra Bunce and her husband Rick of Sioux City, Robert O’Hern and his wife Lori of Des Moines, IA, Donald O’Hern and his wife Sherri of Sioux City; a brother: James O’Hern and his wife Mary of Norwalk, IA; a sister in law: Patty Harrison and her husband John of Sioux City; 8 grandchildren: Jason Bunce (Megan), Brian Bunce (Ashley), Catherine Martinez, Rebecca Ramsey, Charlotte Perry (Matt), Connor O’Hern, Shawn O’Hern (fiancé Megan), Casey O’Hern and 11 great grandchildren. Duke is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
